He was a starting pitcher and 3rd baseman his freshman year and was the starting short stop his sophomore season. In 2002 Dan played middle infield for Mayville State University on a team that had its best season in school history to date, finishing 5ththat year in the NAIA World Series. He finished his 4th year of college at University of Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico where he hit over .300 for the 3rd season in a row.

Dan played three seasons in the WMBL with the Calgary Dawgs, Red Deer Generals and the Edmonton Prospects. In 2004 he got his first taste of professional baseball playing in spring training with the Amarillo Dillas in the Central Baseball League.  In 2005-06 he played baseball in Brisbane, Australia and coached a Bantam Rep Team.

In 2006 after a successful open tryout and spring training cracked an opening day Independent roster in the Northern League with the Edmonton Cracker Cats. He played alongside former Major Leaguers Stubby Clapp and Scott Richmond. He played for the Cats in 2006 and a brief stint in 2007 along with the Schaumberg Flyers in the same league.
